Have you noticed?

I have a bad habit. When ever I go to a public place I like to people watch. And with that I also noticed that people have lowered their own expectations on the way they present themselves out in public. And it has been on the decline for a few years now, and I attribute it to the economic downfall, the expectations that are set for them, their financial back ground or they just choose to present themselves in a bad way.
I am not saying that people should look like a million bucks when ever they go out. But a decent pair of pants or a shirt that covers your mid rift will do. I don’t want to chastise people in this blog post that barely make it, so don’t get me wrong. I sometimes run out in a pair of sweats because I don’t feel like putting on a pair of jeans to grab some milk at the corner gas station. I don’t look like a million bucks myself, and have clothes fit for a queen. But I do try to look decent when I head out to the Mall or any public place for a extended period of time.
The same goes for the way we treat our surroundings. Just the other day I was leaving the store, heading to the car when I found a dirty diaper laying in the parking spot next to me. Come on now. Was that really necessary? Or how about the empty apple sauce container, or fast food wrapper that makes its way on the ground and just lays there. Do people not care? Have we lost that much respect for ourselves and our surroundings to just not care anymore?
Remember after 9/11 how everybody had a changed attitude and people treated each other with kindness and respect? Well we are back to pre- 9/11 were rudeness ruled. Or I should say the ” I don’t care ” ” It’s all about me” attitude. I was waiting in the check out lane at the store the other day, and the couple in front of me, had some issues with the correct price on a box of cereal. So it took a little bit for the price check to be done, I just waited and hummed to myself, but the Lady behind me was going into a spasm with her tongue and eyes and sighs, because she was getting irritated with the wait.
So come on people, let’s get back to the basics of showing compassion, courtesy and respect, not just to yourself but to others and your surroundings around you. We are what we make of it, and right now it is not a pretty picture.
